Instagram poll options: the limits Instagram publishes

The quick answer

Instagram poll options cap a Story poll at four answers, each answer option at 24 characters and the question itself at 80 characters. Instagram's own announcement adds the clock: the poll and its tally disappear after 24 hours, the same lifespan as the Story carrying it. Chat polls follow separate, thinner documentation.

Four answers is the ceiling

An Instagram Story poll is a small machine: one question, a handful of answers, one tap from each viewer. The handful has a published size. Dash Social counts the sticker's options and stops at four, and two guides that walk the feature button by button, Blogging Wizard's and Chatfuel's, land on the same number: type your question and up to four answers. You begin with two, rewrite either or both, and add options until the sticker is full.

Four shapes what the question can be. A yes or a no fits in the defaults untouched. Two extra answers let you split a choice the way people actually argue about it: coffee or tea, beach or mountains, release it now or wait. Beyond that the sticker has nothing left to give, so a five-way question has to be cut down or moved somewhere else entirely.

  • Two defaults: a yes and a no, ready before you type a word.
  • Two custom slots: rewrite either default or add fresh answers of your own.
  • A hard stop at four: the control for adding a fifth option is simply not there.

Where the character limits sit

The published limits do not stop at the number of answers; they reach into the text itself. Dash Social puts the question at a limit of 80 characters, which is roughly a sentence and a half and no more. ManyChat documents the other end: each answer option can run to 24 characters, a figure that swallows a short word or two and nothing generous.

Twenty-four characters is tighter than it looks once you start typing. Yes, No, Team A and Friday fit with room to spare. Definitely next Friday afternoon does not, and the sticker will refuse the overflow. Plan the answers the way you plan a headline: short, parallel, readable at a glance.

The chat poll plays by its own unpublished book. The figures above describe the Story sticker; Instagram's help material for chats names the question, the answers and the tap to publish, but no character count appears alongside them.

  • Question: a limit of 80 characters, per Dash Social's published figure.
  • Answer options: up to 24 characters each, per ManyChat's documentation.
  • Chat polls: no character figures published at all.

The 24-hour clock

Every limit above sits inside a bigger one: time. Instagram announced the poll sticker in Stories on October 3, 2017, and paired it with a lifespan from the start. The poll and its tally disappear after 24 hours, the same stretch a Story itself stays live, so the sticker never outlives the frame it sits on.

There is no extension to grant and no archive to reopen. After the Story expires, the question, the answers and the numbers are gone together. If you want the tally for anything afterwards, you read it before the day is out.

One day, one frame, one window for the whole question. That is the whole deal Instagram offers here, and there is no dial behind it.

  • The poll lives exactly as long as the Story it sits on.
  • The tally goes with it; nothing is kept after expiry.
  • The clock runs whether or not a single vote arrives.

Multiple answers: what Instagram does not publish

A common question, and the published mechanics answer it with silence. Instagram's own material describes one question with fixed answers and a single tap from each viewer; nothing in the sticker, the chat poll or the help pages names a multiple-answers switch. The viewer picks one option and the count moves by one.

If a question really needs several picks, the honest routes are structural. Split the topic across two stickers on the same Story, run the question over consecutive Stories, or move the whole thing to a format built for multi-select. What you cannot do is flip a setting, because the Instagram poll options carry no such setting to flip.

  • One tap per viewer, and the tally moves by one.
  • No toggle on the Story sticker, no toggle in chat.
  • Workarounds are structural: two stickers, consecutive Stories, or a different format.

Story poll versus chat poll

Instagram carries the poll idea on two surfaces, and they are not twins. The Story sticker lives in a frame that expires in a day and shows every viewer the running percentages once they have tapped. The chat poll lives in a conversation: Instagram's Help Centre says you can ask a question, customise the answers and see how people vote, and setting one up is a two-line job, enter the question and answers and tap Create Poll.

For the options question, that difference matters. A chat poll keeps its answers in front of a fixed group for as long as the conversation lasts, while the sticker burns bright and vanishes. The published character figures attach to the sticker; the chat poll's numbers are simply not documented in the same detail, which is worth knowing before you promise anyone a limit you cannot cite.

  • Story sticker: four answers, 24 characters each, gone in a day.
  • Chat poll: custom answers in a conversation, published without character figures.
  • Both: one question, one tap, a running tally for the person who asked.

When the count looks wrong

The limits above are also the reason inflated tallies stand out. A Story poll is a small, visible box with a count attached, and a number that runs past the audience which actually saw the frame is plain arithmetic. Organisers running a contest on Story votes read the same sticker their entrants do, and giveaway rules routinely stack their own entry terms on top of the platform's.

That is the honest boundary here: the published mechanics, and nothing that pretends around them. No seller changes what the sticker measures, no trick makes a fifth option appear, and votes gathered by technical means leave exactly the traces an organiser would look for. Instagram treats manipulation of engagement as a rule breach; treat the four-answer, 80-character, 24-hour box as fixed and work inside it.

  • A tally far past the Story's audience is arithmetic in plain sight.
  • Contest organisers read the same sticker their entrants tap.
  • No seller, trick or tool adds a fifth option or lifts a cap.

How to do it

  1. Open the sticker tray

Shoot a frame or pull one from your gallery, tap the sticker icon at the top of the Story editor, and pick the poll sticker from the tray.

  2. Ask it in 80 characters

Type your question into the sticker's text field. Dash Social puts the published question limit at 80 characters, so short and direct wins before you have typed a word more.

  3. Set up to four answers

Leave the two defaults or tap each row to rewrite it, then add answers until the sticker holds four. Each answer carries up to 24 characters, per ManyChat's published figure.

  4. Share it and let the clock run

Send the Story out and the poll goes live for a day. Viewers tap an answer, see the running percentages, and the whole thing disappears with the Story after 24 hours.

Common questions

How many options can an Instagram Story poll have?

An Instagram Story poll holds up to four answer options. Dash Social counts the sticker at a maximum of four, and guides that walk the feature button by button, including Blogging Wizard's and Chatfuel's, land on the same number: you begin with two answers and add options until the sticker is full.

Is there a character limit on Instagram poll answers?

Yes. ManyChat puts the limit at 24 characters for each answer option, so a bare yes or no fits easily, while a longer answer has to be trimmed before the sticker accepts it.

Can an Instagram poll have more than four options?

No. Every published figure for the Story sticker stops at four options, and no setting or sticker variant raises that number. A question that genuinely needs five answers needs a different format, not a fifth tap on this sticker.

When does an Instagram Story poll close?

After 24 hours, and it does not wait for you. Instagram's announcement says the poll and its tally disappear with the Story itself, so there is no extension to grant and no archive to reopen afterwards.

Do Instagram Story polls allow multiple answers?

No, not on the published mechanics. Instagram describes one question with fixed answers and a single tap from each viewer, and neither the Story sticker nor the chat poll carries a multiple-answers switch in its help material.

Limits of this guide

Instagram does not offer a fifth option on a Story poll, does not publish a multiple-answers toggle, and does not keep a Story poll alive past 24 hours. The 24-character answer cap and the 80-character question cap are fixed; no setting stretches them. A chat poll runs on its own undocumented numbers. And never buy poll votes for a contest: it changes nothing the sticker measures and sits against the platform's own rules.

Rules come from the platform and the organiser

X prohibits coordinating with or compensating others to inflate engagement metrics, and it names Polls among the features covered. The Pet Industry Business Awards name the consequence in their own contest: a business may be investigated, lose votes or be disqualified on reasonable evidence of purchased votes. No seller can stop an organiser from doing that.

Why ordinary voting looks ordinary

Slido says it is alerted when an event gets an unusually high number of votes in a very short time, and Crowdsignal says its built-in measures detect patterns of potentially abusive voting. Ordinary participation arrives spread across the voting window, from different people at different moments. Nothing on this site is a method for getting a vote past a check, and a vote that a tool blocks does not count.

The legal position, and what is refused

Organiser rules differ: the RSPCA Pet of the Year Awards allow extra votes through donations on their official mechanism, while OpenTable Australia treats a vote cast in exchange for money or a reward as null and void. Both are contest rules, not statutes, and whether payment is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. Orders are refused for any contest whose rules ban paid votes, and for political ballots.

What a refund covers, and what it never does

Votes ordered for a poll that never appear on its count are refunded after the poll closes. A refund never covers an organiser's decision: Localsearch may void all votes for a disqualified nominee, and Mentimeter says a user whose access it cancels under its Acceptable Use Policy is owed no refund or compensation. No result is promised.
